Up until now, scientists have thought that the first shoes were worn almost 30,000 years ago. But now, thanks to Erik Trinkaus, they have discovered that the first shoes worn were 40,000 years ago. So, you're probably wondering how they did it since the oldest surviving shoes are about 10,000 years old. Well, by wearing shoes, it affects your bones in your foot. By examining old skeletons and using this data, Trinkaus discovered that toe bones started changing around 40,000 years ago.
Back hundreds of thousands of years ago, humans had big thick toe bones. This was due to all the walking and climbing that they did. Toe bone size began to change 40,000 years ago. It was concluded that this was due to use of shoes. Trinkaus' theory is based on this: Bone size isn't set in stone.
